I've seen these floating around on the pinasphere for a while now, and so I thought I'd have a go at making some myself. Everybody loves homemade things especially at Christmas, so they are the perfect gift to give your friends, family, co-workers, or to just keep for yourself. They are so easy to make, and they look great as part of a festive hamper, or even as just a pre-christmas gift.

HOT CHOCOLATE BAUBLES

I have seen these great diy hot chocolate gift ideas in little mason jars, but I've completely fallen in love with the idea used by Bubbly Nature Creations of using a Christmas bauble. I think it just makes them look that little bit more festive. I never realised how hard it is to find a completely transparent bauble! After hours of searching, I did find some at PaperChase (who would of thought), which luckily are on offer at 3 for 2. If you want to go for something different, you could go for a jar/bottle, a piping bag, or any other container you may want to use. The idea of using a transparent container is to make them look visually exciting, which is pretty easy when it comes to anything involving chocolates and sweets! The best way is to use different colours and layer them up.

HOT CHOCOLATE BAUBLES

This recipe makes 12 tasty shortbread cookies.

    INGREDIENTS

  • Bauble or other container
  • Hot chocolate of your choice
  • Marshmallows
  • Chocolate chips
  • Fudge
  • Candy cane

    INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Make sure you wash the bauble out before you use it, you don't want any glitter in your hot chocolate, well not non-editable glitter anyway.
  2. The method is pretty self-explanatory but a little tip is to use a small funnel to layer each level to keep it neat. I started off with the hot chocolate at the bottom, (I used one sachet of instant hot chocolate) and layered it up with Christmas coloured sprinkles, chocolate chip, fudge, crushed candy canes, and to finish off with a huge helping of marshmallows. Put the finest item at the bottom and the most coarse on top to stop them from seeping through. For decoration, I tied the baubles with ribbon and added a little instruction label. As I was making these at the same time as the chocolate spoons, I had some melted chocolate left over, so I dipped the candy cane in and decorated with Christmas coloured sprinkles. This can be used to stir in with the hot chocolate to give it a little peppermint kick. If you want to make some which aren't so sweet, try adding in cinnamon and mixed spices.

HOT CHOCOLATE SPOONS

You can choose any type of chocolate, but ideally choose a cooking chocolate that is ideal for melting, or go for something with a higher cocoa content than milk as these melt a little better. For the mould, I chose to use a plastic cup; this is a cheap and easy method. Other things you can use are silicone trays, ice cube trays/ice pop trays as long as it has enough depth to hold your spoon and chocolate. I wanted to go festive so I went with the red spoon. You can use sticks, even a candy cane as a little extra treat. For the toppings, you can pick almost anything you want. I went for chocolate chips, fudge, crushed candy canes and marshmallows. This is such a fun idea so make sure you get really creative! If you choose to use a stick, you can pierce on a larger marshmallow, or fudge or even a brownie piece, and coat those in chocolate.

HOT CHOCOLATE SPOONS

This recipe makes 12 tasty shortbread cookies.

    INGREDIENTS

  • Chocolate of your choice (150g x2)
  • A mould
  • Spoons
  • Sprinkles/candy canes/fudge or any other little added extras

    INSTRUCTIONS

  1. All you need to do is melt your chocolate in the microwave at a low power. Check it every 30 seconds and give it a little stir to stop it burning.
  2. Once melted, pour the chocolate into your chosen mould. I let the chocolate cool a little at room temperature to stiffen so the spoon can keep balanced. Simply just add your spoon and sprinkle with your chosen delight and pop it into the fridge to set for about an hour. To remove, just cut the cup and peel away. If your chocolate is having a little trouble being removed, dip your mould into hot water until it softens a little. To decorate, I placed them in little cake pop bags, added a label and tied with festive ribbon.

Like I said, these are both such easy recipes to try out, so I hope this post has got you inspired to get all DIY for the festive season. Let me know in the comments below what you'll be adding to your hot chocolate bauble or spoon.
